Charlene needs your help for her children
Charlene Esparago, a 33-year-old Filipina living in South Korea and single mother of three children, is a victim of a fraud employer. She did not know of her employer’s illegal activities until she got arrested on June 18, 2021. She is currently in Suwon Jail while her two daughters are in a church shelter. Her son is currently in the Philippines.
Her family and friends are appealing for support – she needs a legal counsel to aid in her case as well as financial support for her children specially for her twins to repatriate as soon as possible in the Philippines while she is going through her case.
A background on Charlene
Charlene, born on January 22, 1988, came from a poor family. After finishing secondary school, she decided to start working to help her parents and siblings. She worked in several fast food restaurant and local factories.
In 2006, through friends, she met her Korean husband Mr. Jo. After they got married that year, Charlene and Jo moved to South Korea. In 2008, she bore her son.
It was never an easy life for Charlene and her family. Her husband did not have a regular job and she needed to work as well. For her to be able to work full-time, in 2009, she decided to bring her son to the Philippines for her parents to take care of. Unfortunately, in that same year, her married to Hui Jo ended.
On year after, she met Lance, whom she lived with until 2019. In 2012, she bore twins, Cailyn and Cassidy. Now with two daughters to raise, her original plan of bringing her son back to Korea got delayed. She did not have a full-time job and had to juggle part-time jobs she got in factories, bars and restaurants.
Indeed, being a single mother for her three children is one tough challenge for Charlene.
Frauded
In May 2021, she got hired by an employer through online. For an attractive salary offer, Charlene accepted the job, which was simply to run ad hoc errands whose instructions she would be given day by day. On June 18, she was arrested by the police while she was doing her work. It was only then that she found out that her employer was into illegal activities.
Her current situation
Her sister, Josh, who is in the Philippines, was informed of Charlene’s situation through a common friend. Josh called the Philippine Embassy in South Korea where she received confirmation of Charlene’s case. During that time (June 24), however, no information on Charlene or her case could be provided as the Embassy has not yet managed to personally check on or call Charlene.
On June 28, she was informed by the Philippine Embassy that Charlene is in Suwon Jail and that the latter was set to visit her sister in July.
As for the case of Charlene’s daughters, with the goodness of the Osan Migrant Center, through Pastor Jones, were temporarily transferred to a church shelter on July 5. On July 8, Charlene was given a chance to call her daughters albeit for a very brief moment.
Appeal for help
No matter how difficult her situation is, Charlene would not go for a life of crime just to raise her children. Her family and friends are appealing for support, in particular, for the immediate repatriation of her children, Cailyn and Cassidy, back to the Philippines so that they can continue their education under the foster care of their grandparents, Charlene’s parents. Without their mother to take care of them, Cailyn and Cassidy needs urgent attention, love and care from Charlene’s immediate family while Charlene is going through her case.

샤를렌과 그녀의 가족에게 쉬운 삶이 아니었습니다. 남편은 정기적인 일자리가 없었고 그녀 역시 일해야 했습니다. 풀타임 일을 하기 위해 2009년에 그녀는 아들을 필리핀 부모님께 보내기로 했습니다. 불행히도 같은 해에 결혼생활은 끝이 났습니다.
1년 뒤에 그녀는 2019년까지 함께 살았던 랜스를 만났습니다. 2012년에 그녀는 쌍둥이인 케일린과 캐시디를 가졌습니다. 두 딸아이를 키워야 하기 때문에, 아들을 한국으로 데려오고자 했던 원래 계획은 늦춰졌습니다. 그녀는 풀타입 일을 가질 수 없었고 공장이나 바, 식당 등에서 파트타임 일자리만 전전해야 했습니다. 정말 세 아이의 싱글맘은 샤를렌에게 험난한 일입니다.
사기를 당하다
2021년 5월에 그녀는 온라인으로 일자리를 찾았습니다. 괜찮은 월급이어서 그녀는 그 일을 받아들였습니다. 그것은 날마다 그때그때 시키는 심부름 일을 단순히 하는 것이었습니다. 그런데 6월 18일 그녀는 일을 하다가 경찰에 체포되었습니다. 그때서야 그녀는 고용주가 불법 행위에 관련되어 있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다.
현재 상황
필리핀에 있는 그녀의 여동생 조시가 샤를렌의 상황을 들었습니다. 조시는 한국의 필리핀 대사관에 연락을 했고 샤를렌의 사건에 대해 확인을 받았습니다. 그러나 6월 24일 당시에는 샤를렌이나 그녀의 사건이 어찌 될지 알 수 없었습니다. 대사관도 아직 개인적으로 체크를 하거나 샤를렌에게 연락하지 못했기 때문입니다.
6월 28일에 조시는 샤를렌이 수원구치소에 있고 대사관이 7월에 그녀를 방문할 것이라는 것을 들었습니다.
샤를렌의 딸들은 오산이주민센터 존스 선교사의 도움으로 7월 5일부터 교회 쉼터에 일시적으로 있게 되었습니다. 7월 8일 샤를렌은 매우 짧게 딸들과 통화할 수 있었습니다.
도움 요청
그녀의 상황이 얼마나 힘들든, 샤를렌은 아이를 키워야 한다는 이유로 범죄생활로 가지 않았을 것입니다. 그녀의 가족과 친구들은 지원을 요청하고 있습니다. 특히 딸들인 케일린과 캐시디를 바로 필리핀으로 돌려 보내서 조부모가 돌볼 수 있게 하고 학교도 보내야 하기 때문입니다. 엄마의 돌봄이 없는 상황에서 케일린과 캐시디는 샤를렌이 사건을 마무리하는 동안 가족의 사랑과 돌봄이 필요합니다. 저희는 샤를렌의 사건에 대한 법적 조력도 호소드립니다.
