2021.01.30 [Migrants’ activity] A campaign to ensure safe and humane housing for migrant workers
Over the past few days, a number of labor activists organized one-person protests, to denounce the low conditions of employment of migrants and accommodation in subhuman facilities, demanding official authorities to intervene and not to allow this type of housing as places of residence for migrant workers.
This campaign comes after the death of a 30-year-old female Cambodian worker inside a greenhouse on a farm in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, due to the freezing weather during her sleep last December, the deceased and a number of her colleagues were staying in a greenhouse that is being used as accommodation for migrant workers.
The campaign carried banners saying “vinyl greenhouses is not for living”, “make fundamental improvement of migrant workers’ poor housing”.
According to the Ministry of Employment and Labor data, 31.7 percent, of the businesses using the migrant workforce failed to meet minimum requirements for living standards for their foreign employees.
